You gotta know what you like in this world….
On Saturday night, Wendy invited me out to see Euphoric Tendencies, a new play now playing at the Access Theater. If you haven’t seen this show. Go. Now.
It’s essentially a BDSM coming of age story written by and starring people in the scene. Wendy has an excellent review on her blog. It’s an amazingly sweet show that doesn’t fall into any cloying or cliche plot turns that would have been easy given the subject matter.
It’s been a while since a show has resonated with me so deeply. There were a number of scenes where I found myself thinking. Oh I’ve had that conversation before or I remember when I went through something like that. It’s been a while since I’ve found such a strong connection to a work of art.
My last post was actually triggered in part by one of the lines in the show. The main character, Beth, has just discovered kink and bisexuality through her housemate, Mina. She asks mina if she thinks there is something wrong with them for liking that kind of stuff. Mina’s answer is something to the effect of… You can agonize over it, or you can just be, and let yourself enjoy it. Although the exact line has disappeared from my brain, the idea still rings very clearly. I kind of like it.
… I’m out of philosophical musings for the time being.
I’ve also seemed to discover the soundtrack to Spring Awakening , which I’ve been listening to nonstop for the last week. The show is essentially about teenagers discovering their sexual identity. In other words angstyness with a side of extra angst. I found a translation of the source material online and was quite underwhelmed. So while I’m not sure if I want to shell out over 90 bucks to see the show, although their is one scene where a girl discovers she’s into pain, I’ll be damned if the music isn’t catchy.
I really need to have more sex and/or play so I have more interesting things to write about.
